"...but for us it’s the music. It’s the kirtan. That’s what drives us . . .to hear the names of God melodiously and repetitively chanted for hours at a time, and to participate in the chant."
-Caru Das, Co-Founder of Utah Festival of Colors
KIRTAN:
A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF PAST & PRESENT
WHAT IS KIRTAN?
Kirtan is a devotional singing, or chanting, practice that is commonly performed in a call-and-response method. Its origins can be rooted to ancient India and is practiced throughout the subcontinent; however, it is often associated with Hinduism.
The medium of kirtan aims to solidify the soulful connection between the devotee and their deity, and it is believed to be a transcending and spiritually cleansing experience. Kirtan is performed ritualistically for life-rites to holy festivals but is also sung on non-celebratory days.
Today, kirtan has evolved in style and performance, and is experienced globally by individuals from all walks of life.
